One of the Texas communities we know and serve.
Katy is a city west of downtown Houston, at the point where Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties meet. Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 90 run through it. The area was first settled as Cane Island, named for Cane Island Creek. The name Katy is usually linked to the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, known as the K-T, which built through the site in the late nineteenth century.
Farming shaped the early town. Rice arrived at the start of the twentieth century and replaced cotton, peanuts and corn as the main crop. The Galveston hurricane at the turn of the century destroyed most of Katy's buildings, and the town rebuilt. A natural gas field discovered in the nineteen-thirties became an important industry, and the City of Katy was formally incorporated in the nineteen-forties.
That history is still visible downtown. Historical markers on homes and buildings make up a walking or driving tour. Katy Heritage Park, the Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum and the Katy Veterans Memorial Museum sit near each other, and the restored MKT Railroad Depot anchors a pocket park downtown. Every October the Katy Rice Harvest Festival celebrates the area's rice-farming roots.
