One of the Texas communities we know and serve.
Fredericksburg is the county seat of Gillespie County, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country west of Austin. German immigrants founded it in the nineteenth century under the Adelsverein, also called the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas. John O. Meusebach chose the site and named the town for Prince Frederick of Prussia. Meusebach later negotiated a peace treaty with the Comanche that opened nearby lands to settlement.
The town's German roots show in its architecture. In the early years the Vereins Kirche served as church, school, fortress and meeting hall, and a replica now stands on the Marktplatz as a museum. Farmers who traveled long distances to church built small Sunday houses in town for weekends and religious holidays, and many still stand. The Fredericksburg Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Fredericksburg was the hometown of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, and his family's former hotel is now part of the National Museum of the Pacific War. Gillespie County peach orchards, wineries along U.S. Highway 290, and annual events such as Oktoberfest bring visitors to town.
